Epidermal Inflammatory Activity Is an Important Driver of Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Lesions, Stephanie Schell, PhD

Genetics and mechanical stress play a role in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic, inflammatory skin disease, but the causes and types of inflammation are not fully understood. Stephanie Schell, PhD, from the Department of Dermatology at Penn State College of Medicine, and colleagues identified multiple cytokines present in the epidermis of patients with HS of varying severity. Their findings suggest that current approaches to treatment with established biologic therapies, such as anti-TNF treatments, may not target the range of cytokines present in HS and suggest a potential role for JAK inhibitors. They undertook in vitro studies to assess the potential benefits of JAK inhibition in HS.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS): Patient Perspectives on Biologic Use, Devea R. De, BS

Adoption of biologic therapy among patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is relatively low, even though early initiation of such treatment is associated with reduced sequelae and better long-term outcomes. To help identify potential causes of low adoption, Devea R. De, BS, of the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and colleagues surveyed patients with HS. They found that access to dermatology care was associated with increased knowledge of biologics for HS and greater likelihood of use. The team identified logistical and educational barriers to use of biologics for HS and potential strategies to address these.
