AARS Mentorship Grant Details

Deadline for submission is December 31, 2013

Description: The AARS offers mentorship grants for the purpose of assisting young dermatologists to become leaders and experts in the field of acne and rosacea by acquiring additional academic skills which may not be available at their training institutions. Up to three (3) mentorship grants will be awarded in 2014 and each grant will not exceed $3,000.

All funds are to be spent within 18 months of the receipt of the award.  The AARS does not fund projects that are part of the NIH intramural research program or awards to private foundations without an academic affiliation to dermatology.

Eligible Candidates:  Dermatology residents and dermatology fellows and recent graduates (within 5 years) of US dermatology residency are eligible to apply for these mentorship awards.  The sponsor (project mentor) of the applicant must be a member of the AARS but may not apply for or be named the payee of the grant award.

Proposal: Provide a short discussion of the aims and relevance of the project including sufficient detail for evaluation by the AARS Grant Committee.  This discussion should state what specific goals he/she hopes to achieve with the mentorship experience and the expected duration of mentorship.

Academic/leadership potential of the applicant must be demonstrated either from the applicant's application or department chair's support letters.

Mentor and applicant cannot be from the same institution and mentor must provide written acceptance of the applicant.  An applicant's work is to be with one or two specific mentors, not with an entire department.

Budgeted items may include expenses related to travel specifically to the mentor locations and mini-research with the mentors.  They may not include registration fees for meetings or travel to meetings.

Curriculum Vitae: Attach a brief biographical sketch of the applicant that should include a recent, relevant bibliography.

Requirements:

a) 30 days prior to the start of the mentorship project, the applicant is to reaffirm the dates of the project with the AARS.

b) Within 30 days of completing the approved project, the grantee/mentee is required to submit a written report summarizing the skills or knowledge acquired from this experience.

c) Within 30 days of completing the mentorship experience, the mentor must also submit a follow-up report to the AARS.

d) If an approved mentorship project cannot be completed as originally proposed or within the time limits mandated, the grantee must immediately contact the AARS office.

Deadline: The completed application and supporting materials must be received by December 30, 2013. Grant award recipients will be announced at the 2014 AARS Annual Symposium and approved applications will be funded in July 2014.
